Last month, the LSG teams from Washington, D.C. and Houston had the privilege of attending CERAWeek in Houston, one of the most prestigious global energy events of the year. This conference brought together a diverse group of leaders—from top public officials to Fortune 10 CEOs—who discussed the issues facing the development, transportation, and consumption of the world’s natural resources and the trajectory of the energy sector. Our teams not only supported our clients who participated in various panels and workshops but also took advantage of the opportunity to learn from, and network with, the industry’s preeminent thought leaders.
CERAWeek has always been a platform for groundbreaking discussions, and this year was no exception. The conference highlighted the critical need for affordable, accessible, and sustainable energy solutions. One of the most compelling themes this year was the symbiotic relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and the energy sector. Amazon Web Services’ Vice President of Engineering Bill Vass shared an eye-opening statistic: A new data center is built every three days to help accommodate the burgeoning demands of the AI revolution. This rapid expansion is not without challenges, as it significantly increases energy demand in the growing number of markets where data center development is occurring. The dialogue then turned to the innovative ways that AI is being deployed to optimize operations across the energy sector, from enhancing the performance of trading houses to predicting maintenance needs across sprawling industrial facilities.
During the conference, it became clear the demand for energy is increasing and changing. The industry is under pressure to deliver solutions that are both affordable and sustainable. Across industries, geographies, and political parties, leaders agreed that permitting reform is integral to these efforts. They argued that such reforms are necessary to unlock the potential for significant transmission buildouts and to site badly needed traditional and renewable power projects.
